Attendance and Tardiness
Regular attendance is essential to a student's success in school. "Every parent, guardian, or other person having custody and control of a child... shall cause such child regularly to attend the public school of the district. Such regular attendance shall be during all the days and hours that the public schools are in session... unless it is shown to the satisfaction of the board of education that the mental condition of the child is such that he cannot benefit from the instruction in the school or that the bodily condition of the child is such as to prevent his attendance from school."
(New Jersey Statutes Annotated 19:4-4)
Excessive tardiness may have a detrimental effect upon the academic performance and grade of your child. When a student is tardy, the parent will report with the child to the office for an admission slip to be presented by the student to the classroom teacher.
If a student is absent from school, parents are requested to report the child's absence by calling the office of the principal or the school nurse. After every absence, including those for which excuses have been telephoned to the school, the student must bring in a written excuse to the classroom teacher. This note should include the date absent, the reason for the absence, and the signature of the child's parent or guardian.
Note:
A letter from a physician may be required from students who are absent an excessive number of days.
